Fall Fest Craft Show

Families Plus will be hosting a Fall Fest Craft show on Thursday, October 25th, 2007 from 9am to 2pm. We are proud of our individuals and would like to give them an opportunity to come share their talents. Come by and support our individuals with disabilities by purchasing some of their baked goods, jewelry, sewing projects, art and more.

Familes Plus has hired Stephanie Hernandez to head up the new Employment First Department. She comes with much experience in this field. It is her desire that all people with developmental disabilites have a meaninful day in the community. She will be directing the employment possibilities to assure success on the job, and community access to teach those how to utilize the resources where they live. Family Treasures Thrift Store

The Family Treasures Thrift store has several recycling projects going on: cans, cardboard, rags, etc. They are currently waiting to hear if their request for recycling grant will be issued. They are teaching their developmentally disabled employees the value of recycling. Keep your fingers crossed.
The Thrift store located in Albuquerque's South Valley, at Bridge and Goff in the shopping plaza, has been open for 1 1/2 years and will be expanding soon. Everything in the store is donated and proceeds benefit those served with developmental disabilities in hiring and volunteering. The store is packed with merchandise. Clothes can be bought by the pound when weighed on a State certified scale. Also, look for antiques, collectibles and furniture. Did you ever see a bread box worth $150.00? Or how about buyina a painting from one of our employees with a disability? Or purchase a greeting card created by a woman with Cerebral Palsy that uses her wheelchairs headrest to operato the computer? Shoes are the biggest seller. There is a size and style for everyone, over 100 pairs, many designer styles. Open Monday through Saturday, from 9:00 to 5:00pm. Call 505-247-2889 for more information.

Go Green and Streamline

Thats the motto that employees at Families Plus have adopted. With a new high speed scanner, paperwork will go directly into a computer file for each individual served. This will save tons of paper and trees.

New Services Coming Soon

Families Plus is waiting on final approval to add mores services. Supported Employment, Job Coaching, Job Development, Goods and Services, Community Access and Supplemental Dental. This will enable a full array of services so that the people we serve can stay with one agency. The new standards policy stresses Employment First and Meaningful Day activities. That is, everyone that can needs to be out of the home for at least 30 hours a week. A paying job or volunteering counts as part of that 30 hours. This also gives the Family Living Provider additional break time. It has been found that individuals that have been included in the community improve their social skills and independence. The Community Access program can include bus training, banking, grocery shopping, resume writing and the like. Talk this over with your Service Coordinator and Case Manager for any budget changes.
